A Dirtybird party doesn’t truly start until the fam rolls up, and you bet the same goes for Dirtybird Campout West Coast. Among the many DJs traveling from near and far to the Modesto Reservoir Campgrounds this October, this year’s wilderness weekender is stacked with four showcases full of friendly faces, some old and some new, but all equally ready to throw down on the dancefloor. Let’s get to know them!
Showcase: Justin Jay’s Fantastic Voyage
Starring: Justin Jay (Live + DJ set), Josh Taylor (Live), Thumpasaurus (DJ Set), and The Fantastic
Who They Are: Once one of Dirtybird’s fledgling recruits, Justin Jay is bringing his own Fantastic Voyage event series and label crew to the Campout. Helping get the party started — and making sure it never stops — are Captain Jay’s buddies and collaborators The Fantastic Voyage Band (Benny Bridges, Sam von Horn, Danny G, Henry Was, and Ammo), funk quintet Thumpasaurus, and vocalist Josh Taylor.
What They Do: A concept born from a college dorm room, the Fantastic Voyage philosophy is all about the three Fs: Friendship, Fun, and Freedom. It’s about having a fresh, funky, feel-good time that’ll give you beer-soaked flashbacks to your last house party, if your last night out was a groovy, bass-booming hybrid of a frat rager and the Paradise Garage. Think of the Fantastic Voyage as not just a party, but as a state of mind, where you can be your truest and weirdest self without any judgment. To quote the song from which the crew gets its namesake: “It's live, live, it's all the way live … Just forget about your troubles and your nine to five.”
Music Prep: What do you do when you have all the homies under one roof? Apparently, you make an album. Back in 2016, Justin and friends got together to create the Fantastic Voyage LP, which throughout its 12 tracks oscillates between ruminating vocal ballads and electric club energy, managing the perfect balance between boogying down on the dancefloor and catching your breath, and getting ready to do it all over again. Specifically, songs like “Karma” and “Climbing Trees” have the percussive and deep, driving intensity to carry you through the night (though who are we kidding, all Dirtybirds are nocturnal by nature). Even better: you can listen to the full album in mix form.
Fall tour: Dirtybird Presents Justin Jay Cash Money Tour starting August 3 through October!
